AI referrals are one measurable outcome of visibility. They do not capture every exposure, and missing attribution does not prove that a visit came from AI.
Keep visibility and traffic distinct
An answer can mention or cite a brand without producing a click. Referral analytics begin when a visitor reaches the site and usable source information is available. These are related but different parts of the journey.
Keep an answer-observation report next to your acquisition report. Do not multiply mentions by an invented click-through rate to estimate traffic.
Define a transparent channel rule
Review actual referring hosts in the analytics tool or server logs you are authorized to use. Build an explicit, maintained grouping for recognized AI products. Product domains and referral behavior can change, so revisit the rule rather than treating a fixed list as permanent.
Exclude your own test visits where feasible. Some clients suppress referrers or open links in another context. Classify unattributed traffic according to the evidence available, without labeling all direct visits as AI.
Measure useful actions
Choose outcomes that fit the site: reading an implementation guide, visiting a related resource or continuing to the main Arrow website. Define the event before collecting it, and keep privacy requirements in view.
On an editorial site, outbound ecosystem clicks can be useful signals. If analytics is introduced, describe collection accurately in the privacy notice and configure consent where required. This site does not need tracking scripts to make its content accessible.
Use the landing page as a clue
A referral to a technical article may represent a different intent from a visit to a provider comparison. Analyze the landing page and subsequent action rather than only the total channel count.
If a cited page produces few visits, that does not make it worthless. It may still inform answers. Likewise, a traffic increase without citations in your small benchmark is possible. Explain the limits of both instruments in the report.
Your next steps
- Maintain an evidence-based referral grouping.
- Exclude internal validation traffic.
- Measure a small number of relevant outcomes.
- Do not reclassify all direct traffic as AI.
